This week, we’re thrilled to have a special guest on the show — someone with many talents I’ve known since our college days. Notably, she even orchestrated my wedding eleven years ago! Please give a warm welcome to Dr. Damilola Balogun. She’s a true polymath, encompassing roles as a dentist, dental surgeon, partner in a dental practice, an event planner, and a successful entrepreneur. Dr. Damilola hails from a family of eight, including six siblings, and calls the vibrant city of Ibadan in Oyo State, Nigeria, her home. Describing her family as incredibly close-knit, she has been happily married for a decade with two wonderful children.
In the course of our conversation, Dr. Damilola delves into her journey into the field of dentistry. She candidly shares her initial aspiration to study Medicine and Surgery, a dream that faced setbacks, leading her to pursue a diploma route at the University of Lagos. Despite achieving a remarkable CGPA of 4.6 and meeting the criteria for medicine and surgery, administrative decisions at the university initially pushed her toward pharmacology. However, a chance meeting with her uncle and a serendipitous choice led her to discover and fall in love with dentistry.
Dr. Damilola also elaborates on her professional path and experiences, explaining her decision to forego Nigerian residency due to the complex political landscape within the field. She underscores the importance of goodwill and sincerity in one’s journey. While on maternity leave, her commitment and impact at work were evident, leading her employers to offer her a partnership with benefits such as profit-sharing and active involvement in business decisions.
